Nutritional Information for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

7 May

Each and every day we hear about more and more synthetic chemicals being added to most of the processed food in this country. The result is that children are increasingly being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  I have outlined below suggestions for what to eliminate and what to add.

Trial elimination of most common foods that cause allergens (wheat, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, peanuts, citrus fruit, chocolate, tomatoes, sugar, yeast)

Implementation of a rotation diet high in protein, fresh fruits and vegetables which are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals and low in sugar and refined carbohydrates

Trial elimination of gluten and casein from the diet.  Gluten containing grains include wheat, oats, barley, rye, semolina, spelt, triticale and kamut.  Acceptable grains are brown rice, sweet rice, quinoa, amaranth, teff and millet.

Casein is a protein found in dairy products.  The following dietary foods need to be eliminated:  milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, lactose, whey and caseinates.

Trial elimination of food containing yeast and molds such as all baked goods, condiments, candy, mushrooms, vinegar, most fruits.

Supplementation with a multi-vitamin in order to repair any nutritional deficiencies that may exist as a result of malabsorption or improper diet.

Supplementation with nutrients that promote digestion such as digestive enzymes.

Supplementation with nutrients that have healing properties for the gut wall such as colostrum, certain amino acids and lactoferrin.

Supplementation with probiotics in order to maintain a healthy balance of beneficial intestinal microflora.

Try to consume as many foods that do not contain ingredients as possibile.  These will be your best bet.
